Hiring Talent

Hiring Strong Talent

💡 Lets talk about how to hire the best agencies, developers, designers, and project managers

Working with Agencies

Am I biased here? Maybe… but if you have no technical experience you will want to work with a strong agency to get the most for your money.

But not all agencies are treated equally!

If it’s just a bunch of developers, you are likely to run into the same issues as working with a freelance developer. They will just know development and nothing else about what is takes to build a successful software company.

You want to work with a team who doesn’t just know how to build a basic product, you need a team who knows everything laid out in this document and has experience implementing it as well, like WGMI LABS ;)

I always say that your MVP is just the starting line. The real work begins once you start getting users on your SaaS and knowing what to do at that stage.

For the most part, all of these agencies will get you a working product. And if that is where you are setting the bar, then just go for the cheapest!

But if you actually want a product your users are going to want to tell their friends about and have an actual software company, not just a basic product, you will want to take some time in vetting the agency.

I recommend you get on calls with multiple before making your decision. See what they say, pay attention to what they try and direct your focus too. Are they just agreeing with everything you say? Do they give you ridiculously low quotes and budgets?

All things you should be paying attention to.

To be honest with you this is why we started WGMI LABS. We want to build successful software companies for people. Not just collect a check and build the product as fast as we can just to move on.

In fact I would love for us to be your first call with an agency! If you have a few minutes I would love to personally chat about where you are at in the process and help further point you in the right direction.

Hiring a Developer

This is more for those with more technical experience, as its way too easy to get taken advantage of by these freelance developers.

Please understand that they do not share your vision, they don’t care if your project is successful, and they will have multiple other on going projects at once (without a team to help).

So unless you really know what you are doing this could actually end up costing the most and taking the longest.

They do have those enticing low hourly rates, but at the end of the day you will get what you pay for. If you skimp out in the beginning, you will pay tenfold in the end.

But, if you do still think this is the best route for you, here are a few helpful tips and tricks to follow.

For hiring developers you can use freelance market places like Upwork, Fiver, Toptal, etc... In this video I will walk you through exactly how to go about hiring developers.

Project Management

Now once you have found a what you think to be a dependable and trust worthy candidate you need to ensure you properly manage them through out the duration of the project.

If you aren’t on top of this, then your project will take longer and cost more. Freelancers aren’t too motivated to work hard on your project, they will do the minimum to not get fired.

So make sure you actively track their progress every step of the way. We aren’t building company culture hear so its okay to micro manage at this stage.

Do note though that the more meetings you have the more you disrupt their actual work. Keep communication as async as possible.

Below is an example of one of our client trello boards to give you an example on how to structure your tasks and what’s actively being worked on.

Hiring a Designer

When working with a designer, it is helpful if you have examples of what your application should look like so you can provide them with some sort of information.

It can be hard taking your idea out of your head and presenting it to someone else and having them fully understand it.

You will typically go back and forth with the designer until it is to your liking. But provide them with as much detail upfront as you can.

They will need to understand your app front to back.
